Gospel singer ANTHNY is emerging as one of the leading voices in Gospel music. His technical training at the illustrious Berklee College of Music combined with his tenacious drive for singing and songwriting that he’s had since the age of 11 is setting him up for a long and prosperous career.
But, he’s not above reproach. In a sit-down with Elev8 correspondent Jeff Lewis, he opened up about what inspired his newly released song “Mercy.” He said he wrote the song in tears. The Lord was dealing with him personally and he questioned the way he was viewing him as a believer. ANTHNY believes that often times we reject the part of God that deal with obedience in favor of a merciful savior. But, you can’t have one foot in and one foot out in your walk with God.
“I think whenever you start to see God in just His totality and the complete of who He is, the response is not always warm and bubbly and fuzzy,” he said. “The response is a lot of the times, the fear of the Lord that will make you get on your knees and be like ‘Hey God, I haven’t been doing this thing right.’”
Don’t be fooled by “Mercy’s” reggae groove, ANTHNY said his music puts people in a position where they can examine themselves. There’s always a message in his music.
“Even in Gospel and doing Christian music people want part of the message which is ‘God is Love,’” he explained. “That is what everybody wants to hear. But, when the Lord leads you to share something else in your music that might not be a little bit more vulnerable or an unfavorable side of our faith for people outside who don’t know about it, there’s always going to be temptation to water that down.”
ANTHNY floats above that temptation by remaining obedient to the Lord. He said obedience works for him. He wants the young people he’s ministering to through his music to develop true intimacy with Jesus and approach him in a raw and honest way. Invite the Lord into your life and give him your worries and wins. ANTHNY believes the generation before him didn’t teach that to him and his peers.
“The reason that I love the way that this music and my age group and my peers are responding to this music is because I feel like generations before didn’t necessarily teach us what it is to have a real, honest, vulnerable, repentant and just close relationship with Jesus,” he said.
The only way to access intimacy is to be vulnerable. Once believers master that, ANTHNY believes they will strengthen their relationship with God.
