The sexist phrase, “she plays like a girl,” has a more robust and positive meaning thanks to tenacious women athletes like A’ja Wilson. The Las Vegas Aces forward is trending for scoring a six-year contract with Nike – one of history’s largest deals for a women’s basketball player.
This profitable deal comes on the heels of the athlete announcing her signature shoe, A’One, which will be released in the spring of 2025. “It’s been incredible working with Nike toward a dream of having my collection, and it really is an honor to take this next step and become a Nike signature athlete,” Wilson said in a statement regarding her shoe deal. “From my logo to the look of the shoe and the pieces throughout the collection, we’ve worked to make sure every detail is perfectly tuned to my game and style.”
A’ja Wilson isn’t New To This, But True To This
This isn’t Wilson’s first rodeo when it comes to making history. The South Carolina native became the first in the WNBA’s history to achieve at least 35 points, ten rebounds, and five steals in a single game. According to ESPN, she is also the first to have 35 points and five steals in more than one game.
Society has taken some time to spotlight and recognize women’s sports globally, and it is taking even longer for the dollars to match their talents. This significant deal between Wilson and Nike is much more than a well-deserved payday for the phenomenal player. It’s a step in a positive direction regarding equality and women’s rights.
Thank you, A’ja, for breaking barriers and giving little girls and women hope!
